Spring Commissioning

Spring commissioning means different things to all of us. Traditionally we take our winter covers off and wonder how the boat got dirty after cleaning and covering it last fall. We imagine our boat gleaming after a wash and seasonal wax. Checking the engine compartment for leaks, inspecting hoses, clamps, belts, fluid levels and water systems are all spring time New England boating activities.
Spring commissioning requires so much more than cleaning and a mechanical check up.
What about safety? Are the fire extinguishers up to date? when was the last time on board extinguisher system was checked and weighed by a professional. Are the life jackets clean? Any rips or tears? Strap condition good? Is there any dry rot? Flares up to date? Horn function along with a whistle on board?
Next on the list is docking. What kind of shape are our lines in? Fenders looking good and full of air? How about the cleats on our dock. re they secure? Then it's on to the anchor and rode. Is the rode end securely fastened to the boat in the anchor locker? Rode rope to chain connection clean and secure? Are the windlass and remote properly functioning?
Last but by no means least we need to knock the rust off our on water handling skills. Do we remember how to read wind and current?
Time to start thinking about all of these things as we begin a new season.
Happy and Safe Boating
